Hannah was born into a wealthy family in Mapledurham, United Kingdom, in 1875. Well-educated at a finishing school in Switzerland and speaking four languages, she arrived in Australia in 1921 with her husband and children. The family settled on virgin land in Denmark, Western Australia, in the relatively primitive conditions of the time with one horse as transport. For eleven years Hannah meticulously entered in her diaries every day. These now-transcribed diaries give us a rare insight into the relations and associations she had on an everyday basis – with her family, friends and the wider community of Denmark – and a glimpse of how life was for a woman in the country during War World II.
